With sights set on becoming an orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Smith was preparing to go to medical school. While playing football at Randolph-Macon College in Virginia, he sustained a football injury. Dr. Smith sought the help of a local chiropractor.

“As he was describing the nature of the injury, it made a lot of sense to me.” Dr. Smith made significant progress while he was under chiropractic care. That’s when he realized that becoming a chiropractor would be his life’s work.

After completing his undergrad studies, Dr. Smith attended Life University in Marietta, Georgia. He earned his Doctor of Chiropractic in 1993. Dr. Smith stayed on at Life for two years and taught some radiology classes. He also practiced part-time at a clinic that was provided for the Life faculty.

Understanding that the nervous system controls everything, including the immune system, Dr. Smith and two classmates wanted to determine a way to prove that that link existed from a research standpoint.

After going through a lengthy process, they came up with a research project-working on HIV positive patients and monitoring their CD4 cell counts. CD4 cells are a type of T cells. Dr. Smith and his peers wanted to see if any changes would occur while patients were under chiropractic care.

While doing clinical trials, they saw an increase in the CD4 cell counts of patients concurrent with the adjustments they received. Dr. Smith and his peers were able to quantify the results through bloodwork. Their project got published. “To see those cells preserved and increase in number was significant as they normally get destroyed in HIV patients.”

After leaving Life, Dr. Smith worked in Virginia Beach for eight years. He then came to North Carolina and practiced with Dr. Randy Schilsky, the past president of the North Carolina Board of Chiropractors. “We realized we both went to the same high school in Virginia Beach, and he convinced me to come to North Carolina and work for him.”

Dr. Smith worked with Dr. Schilsky for a number of years. Dr. Schilsky and Dr. Frogley knew each other for many years, and that led Dr. Smith to come on board with Dr. Frogley in 2016.

Outside the Practice

When he’s not in the office, Dr. Smith loves spending time with his beautiful wife, Jacqui, who also grew up in Virginia Beach. They have three adult children between them-two daughters and a son. Dr. Smith loves to surf and be in the water. He and Jackie are also involved in their church.

Finding Fulfillment Helping Others

Throughout his many years in practice, Dr. Smith has gained considerable knowledge and skills. He cares for patients of all ages and loves to see when patients experience a breakthrough. In particular, he likes helping the “doubting Thomas” type of patients who come in reluctantly and don’t think they will improve.
